# What to discuss before an exterior refresh

Prepare for an exterior painting estimate with a clear surface list, condition notes, access details, and weather expectations.

### Walk around the whole exterior

Look at siding, trim, entry doors, and other details separately. Note the surfaces you want painted and those you want left as they are. A photograph can help describe an area in your first conversation, but an estimate still needs enough information about the condition and access.

### Point out the areas that concern you

Mention loose coating, staining, damaged trim, or other visible changes. Coating is not a substitute for resolving an underlying problem. Where repairs or further assessment are needed, the painting scope should explain what is included and what needs separate attention.

### Make access part of the estimate

Landscaping, narrow side yards, overhead obstacles, parked vehicles, entrances, and the height of the work can all affect planning. Explain how people use the property and which routes need to remain available.

### Allow the schedule to respond to conditions

Exterior work depends on the surface and the coating requirements as well as the forecast. Discuss the expected sequence and how a change in conditions will be communicated. A preferred week is useful information, but it is not the same as a confirmed weather window.

### Confirm color placement, not only color names

Identify which finish applies to the body, trim, doors, and accents. View physical samples alongside features that stay, such as roofing, masonry, and paving. Keep the approved selections with the written scope.
